How was the eco glitter fun vision born and who else is on the team?

I had been struggling with the issue of plastic glitter for a while and trying to find a solution. When I finally found out that biodegradable glitter existed, but the word wasn't being spread quickly enough, I decided to make it my mission to tell the world. I recruited my best friend Noemi to join in my venture and with the help of our friends and family we started Eco Glitter Fun in December 2016.

After 4 intense months we had a product and website to launch in April 2017. Our mission is to change every pot of glitter in the world to biodegradable! Noemi's Mum is our full-time packer/shipper and we have other glitter fairies bottling and handling our larger retail orders. My husband does all our Graphic Design and we use a couple of Marketing freelancers. Noemi's husband Matt is extremely handy and makes all our stall furniture and photographs all our products.

Tell us a little about your eco glitter. What's it made from and how does it compare to plastic glitter?

The glitter is made from a certified compostable cellulose film (mostly eucalyptus trees) from sustainably sourced FSC plantations. This means it has passed the official requirements for compostability, adhering to European (EN13432) and American (ASTM D6400) standards. It's non-toxic, free of heavy metals and approved for cosmetic use.

Eco Glitter is also cruelty free and vegan friendly. Biodegradation is only initiated in soil, compost or a waste water/oceanic environment where micro-organisms are present. Over several months the glitter will be metabolized by micro-organisms into carbon dioxide, water and biomass.

Have you faced any difficulties in making your idea a reality?

I do not have a business background so the daily challenges of running a business can be tricky. It’s all consuming, all day every day I do glitter work! Let’s just say my husband is very patient! Noemi works hard on the sales and the financial side of things. She's invaluable for the 'behind the scenes' aspects of the business.

What advice do you have for others trying to live a Plastic-Free lifestyle?

Start small with everyday single use items you do can easily live without like straws and plastic water bottles. Try bringing your reusable shopping bag to the supermarket also. Next, move to bringing your own coffee cup when you are out and about. At home we try to specifically buy products that only come in cardboard rather than plastic. We've recently started getting a local weekly Veg box which considerably helps with our plastic consumption.

Is there anything else you would like to mention?

Sometimes, the plastic problem in our world feels overwhelming, or that the damage it irreversible. I believe however, that if everyone does their small part then together we can make a change!
