Plastic-Free World Travel: An Introduction

Hello, Suzie here!

For those of you who don't know me, I'm one of the founders of Plastic-Free Me. I set up the campaign with my partner-in-crime Harriet Lily in January 2017, and I'm so excited by all of the positivity that has come out of it over the past eight months!

I'm currently off on my travels around the globe. As I write this, I'm sitting in a quaint cafe on Quadra Island, British Columbia, sipping another coffee in my own reusable mug and feeling pretty chuffed with myself. In an effort to be as plastic-free as possible on my travels, I've prepped myself with my own stainless steel straw, shopping bags, reusable water bottle and a bamboo toothbrush. However, almost every day, I'm confronted by single-use plastics everywhere, and often frustrated by how difficult it is to travel plastic-free. I frequently find myself having to submit and buy that cursed banana double-wrapped in plastic, or I forget not to ask for a straw and get two of the darn things automatically plopped into my drink.

My main mission is to try and practice what I preach everywhere I go. After Canada, I'll be travelling to South America and I have no idea what to expect in terms of plastic-free living. I'll be frequently hopping from place to place, relying on local stores and outlets for my daily necessities. I'm not overly optimistic about the amount of plastic-free goods that will be available... but I'm up for the challenge!

It's also important that I keep telling myself not to be disheartened. This would be my advice to other eco-conscious travellers too. I'm aware that it will be impossible for me to completely avoid plastic for the next year, but that won't stop me from trying my best. If I make the conscious effort to ditch the disposables everywhere I go, well, at least that's something.

Watch this space for updates as I travel: Here's hoping I can spread the plastic-free mantra to the corners of the globe!

For now, good luck in your own plastic-free journey and please get in touch with us if you want to do more, join us or have any questions. I'd also love it if you joined us on Facebook, and shared us with your friends!
